:)

I'm so behind the times.  I only learned about the Emoji keyboard a few months ago and now I overuse it - so much so I text in rebuses. Emoticons, I overuse as well.  But how better to punctuate without a hashtag?

Now you can wear your fave emoticon in real life, and in GOLD, or silver if that's your thing.  And if you're not into the whole emoticon thing, just remember happy faces pre-date texting.  They were big in the late 80s - remember this song?

Even better, the designer: Alexandra Outerbridge is an independent designer, designing and making in my hometown: Los Angeles. <3 nbsp="" p="">

Good reason to be happy this Monday morning.

My husband and I have been sentimental about New Orleans lately and thinking about an upcoming trip there. And then I realized this morning that Mardi Gras is upon us (tomorrow is Fat Tuesday)!

If I had time to bake, I'd make my own King Cake. And I still might as I've been wanting to get really good at baking brioche (it seems to be the base of most sweet breakfast breads of my Filipino/Spanish heritage).

Instead I'm ordering a few from a local cuban bakery: Porto's and it's sure to be amazing.  I seriously could eat EVERYTHING in their bakery cases, no joke.

Isn't that the point of tomorrow anyway, to go a little wild before some self-imposed austerity measures?  Laissez les bon temps roulez!

A little trivia: the founder of the bakery started her business working out of her home in Silverlake and had a little bakery for awhile in Echo Park.

Finally, a uniform store for grown-ups

I grew up wearing uniforms for school.  Button down oxford shirts, grey wool-gabardine skirts and my favorite: my elementary plaid jumper dresses with emblazoned with embroidered badges.

From my college days to the height of my single lady years, I kind of went wild with color and patterns.  Turquoise, pink, yellow, orange, green - you name it, I had it with shoes, tights, outfits, purses, eyeshadow.  Sometimes all at the same time, in pleasing arrangements of course.

I still try to keep my personality in my outfits (as seen in my latest purchase), but have gone a decidedly simpler route.  This has been a theme in the last few years of my life with early mornings and packing my outfits the night before, typically at the most tired, uninspired moment of my day.  It needs to be easy people - sort of like a uniform!

I was exceedingly happy to stumble upon the online shop Everlane.  Unlike most other sign-up-to-shop sites, which are indistinguishable - this one speaks loudly to me.  Pure unadulterated simple staples.  Ahhhh.

New Views

Photo from HERE

I'm so SO excited about my new eyeglass frames.  I went to my neighborhood optical boutique Gogosha with the intent of purchasing some sensible ones, but quickly realized that was BORING.

I almost got some with a paint splatter effect, but Rudy, my awesome style consultant, and Mr. W thought that was a little...much.

Psha!

In the end I went with some frames by Kirk Originals - a subtle cat eye in a sparkly (as in glitter explosion) red.

Sensible?  No, but so much more me. XO

Life lessons from Jiro

Over the weekend, I was finally able to watch "Jiro Dreams of Sushi."

In addition to adding a meal at his restaurant to my culinary bucket list, watching it had the unexpected consequences of sadness and anxiety which I'm still feeling this morning.

My feelings are wrapped up in the inevitability of mortality, the transformative power of true empathy, responding to one's true calling and optimism.  Lots to think about!

Happy Monday everyone - here's to hoping we each have joy in dreaming of our life's work.  XOXO

Thank You 2012.

It's been a very full year indeed.  I'm feeling fortunate, optimistic and somewhat excited for what 2013 has in store!

A few things I'd like to focus on this year:

  • Write more.
  • Draw more.
  • Cook/eat at home and pack my lunch more.
  • Spend more time with my family.
  • My husband is embarking on a new journey as a holistic health coach, so I'll welcome any adjustments to my diet that he suggests (Cutting carbs, sugar, salt, dairy? I'm open.)
  • Take a class or two.
  • Volunteer.
  • And most of all, I'd like to follow my heart without fear.  I know that sounds a little silly, but in retrospect I'm surprised at how I've let non-important things distract me.  I have a short list of long-thought about goals and I need to accomplish them, or at least try, as a matter of happiness. I deserve to be happy - this is my mission for 2013.

See you next year and may 2013 bring the most amazing days to you! XOXO

Luxe camping, there is such a thing.

When I was planning our wedding, I thought - it would be such a cool idea to rent out a camp ground and set up tents - not the Coleman kind, but the type you'd see on safari.  Okay, I know - crazy, but hear me out:

  • Heavy cream-colored canvas
  • Exchanging stories around a campfire
  • Pendleton blankets
  • Leisurely cookouts of artisanal sausages, cassoulet, grilled pizzas (just because you're camping, doesn't mean you shouldn't eat well!)
  • Requisite hot cocoa and s'mores
  • Forest flowers and pine cones
  • Long picnic tables for the celebratory dinner under some very old trees and under a sparkling night sky
  • Dressing like wood nymphs and passing around a flask of bourbon

Okay, maybe not that last bit (hey why not???), but it could be a really cool way to celebrate with friends and family who are brave enough to rough it for a couple of days, don't you think?

Even if you don't agree, I just discovered a company based in San Francisco called Shelter Co. that can make that dream come true. And if a campground wedding still doesn't appeal to you, hire them to set up a camping (or glamping) trip with some style!
