I've always been very enamored with the Victorians, in fact I went through a very morose/weird Emily Dickinson phase in high school and spoke in an English accent at home - which amused and befuddled my parents greatly.
Keeping close the pictures of loved ones (or locks of hair) is such a romantic thing, don't you think? I mean, we use photos as screen savers on our smartphones but it's not the same! Plus the secrecy of a locket makes it that much more meaningful.
