Thank You 2012.

It's been a very full year indeed.  I'm feeling fortunate, optimistic and somewhat excited for what 2013 has in store!

A few things I'd like to focus on this year:

  • Write more.
  • Draw more.
  • Cook/eat at home and pack my lunch more.
  • Spend more time with my family.
  • My husband is embarking on a new journey as a holistic health coach, so I'll welcome any adjustments to my diet that he suggests (Cutting carbs, sugar, salt, dairy? I'm open.)
  • Take a class or two.
  • Volunteer.
  • And most of all, I'd like to follow my heart without fear.  I know that sounds a little silly, but in retrospect I'm surprised at how I've let non-important things distract me.  I have a short list of long-thought about goals and I need to accomplish them, or at least try, as a matter of happiness. I deserve to be happy - this is my mission for 2013.

See you next year and may 2013 bring the most amazing days to you! XOXO

Luxe camping, there is such a thing.

When I was planning our wedding, I thought - it would be such a cool idea to rent out a camp ground and set up tents - not the Coleman kind, but the type you'd see on safari.  Okay, I know - crazy, but hear me out:

  • Heavy cream-colored canvas
  • Exchanging stories around a campfire
  • Pendleton blankets
  • Leisurely cookouts of artisanal sausages, cassoulet, grilled pizzas (just because you're camping, doesn't mean you shouldn't eat well!)
  • Requisite hot cocoa and s'mores
  • Forest flowers and pine cones
  • Long picnic tables for the celebratory dinner under some very old trees and under a sparkling night sky
  • Dressing like wood nymphs and passing around a flask of bourbon

Okay, maybe not that last bit (hey why not???), but it could be a really cool way to celebrate with friends and family who are brave enough to rough it for a couple of days, don't you think?

Even if you don't agree, I just discovered a company based in San Francisco called Shelter Co. that can make that dream come true. And if a campground wedding still doesn't appeal to you, hire them to set up a camping (or glamping) trip with some style!

New things.

Awesome photo from random Google image search

Today I got up at 5.30a and hauled my behind to Orange County, where I work, far, far away from my comfortable warm bed in Echo Park.

See, I just joined a gym yesterday (online too - so easy, right?).  I've never been a gym person - I've always favored taking classes and long walks on the early side of the AM, around Silverlake Reservoir followed by coffee and some delicious baked good at a neighborhood spot, and by the time that's done...whoa, look at the time!

Obviously that routine is hard to do with great regularity.

I actually liked getting a jump on the day this morning.  I felt so motivated, I think I did a karate chop then skipped my usual coffee and ordered oatmeal with almonds, soy milk and NO sugar.  Crazy? I think so. This is going to be interesting.

Happy Monday!

Don't Give Up.

This week has been a series of not so pleasant moments.  And sometimes things, that don't matter in the grand scheme, get me down.

My family is my best pep squad.  And even when I don't want to hear what they're saying - after a few moments of tears or a night of sleep, I'm better for their words and hugs.  Love you guys!

Keep motivation on hand.  Ring available at Old Hollywood Moxie

Pairings: Autumn Coat and Boots

Happy Monday!

Just came back from a short trip to Columbus, OH where Fall was in full effect: cooler temps, light breezes, that crispness in the air.   Very exciting!

Which reminds me...two of my favorite things right now - and on my growing wish list for Fall.

1. High-heeled ankle boots in a pretty maroon color (surprised how well this color goes with everything).

Sigerson Morrison available at Piperlime

2. A geometric-patterned, slightly oversized tote - in wool and leather.  This brings me to the heart of the season.

A point in time.

I've been in love with the Hermes Medor watch for, like, EVER!  But the price of it new, is a little out of reach unless I'm pinching pennies and skipping my morning coffee.  I've also dropped hints to Mr. W.  I've been looking at gently used, so if anyone has a lead - you know where to find me.

Until then, this one by Unearthen (available at Totokaelo) is a more affordable take on it - a little rough hewned, but with a similar iconic pyramid face.

This one comes in rose gold - which I love, and the wrist band pattern is lovely.

Color Change for the Season

Do you ever look in the mirror and the same shade of lipstick you wear almost daily, looks different on some days than others? This summer has been all about a sheer bright pink (Rouge D'Armani Sheer 501) and a pinky-coral (MAC Crosswires) for lips. I'm surprised I barely had to swap colors out of my cosmetic pouch.  That's pretty impressive for me - or maybe I'm just more low maintenance.

Well, with Fall right around the corner, I acquired a new color.  New lipstick is such a nice way for me to transition into the season.

The color is not really new - I've owned NARS Dolce Vita in lipstick form, but in the Velvet Matte Lip Pencil featured above, it's a more opaque and polished version - love how simple and pretty it is.

Remember this video? This past weekend, I got up close and personal with a version of a highly pigmented party when my Mr. W ran Color Me Rad.

Some of my favorite moments at the run:

Pink pigmented cornstarch.
The calm before the...
But this storm was made up of clouds of color.
And tutus.
And color bombs to the face!
I loved the joy on these kids' faces.
Chaos in the haze.
The battlefield.
The aftermath.

This weekend

I'll be dreaming about Denmark.

Reminders, we all need them.

I used to think once I got to a certain point in my life, I'd be able to slow down and savor.  Lately, I've been feeling like things have been happening so fast and I haven't been able to really enjoy them.

But then - I downloaded the 1500+ photos I've taken since June and was reminded that things are pretty great - been living a full life, with ups and downs but I'm grateful.

Shame, shame.

Art by Jack Greer. Poster available at Poster Child Prints

Do you have those days where you have every intention of eating well (as in: all your veggies, all that water and not much else) and then somehow it snowballs into that scene in Scarface where Al Pacino is sitting in front of that mound of white, except it's sugar and not the other thing?

It rarely happens all at once.  It's more's like a cookie here, a chocolate mini there and by the time dinner hits, you're disgusted with yourself, not to mention energy-less - a lot of it driven my mindless stress-eating. Yesterday was that day - I wanted to press rewind a few times and wished there were a few more hours so I could repent via a good sweat.

No amount of self-loathing is going to change all the above.  I know there are much worse things  besides eating a few calorie-dense morsels here and there (really everywhere).

Moral of the story is: tomorrow is the start of a new day to be and do better.  Learn from the guilt and move on!

Living Room

The agency I work at recently moved into a new space.  Still quite a commute from where I live, but much more "ad agency" than the last space. Anyway, I noticed, they picked up a lot of furnishings from Restoration Hardware.  I haven't been in one of their shops in awhile, but the office furniture made me take another look.

Now, I'm really coveting this sofa.

It's a slight spin on this classic design, but a little more accessible. I love the earthy tone of the leather and the way the sofa seems to beckon me to plop on down!  I'd accessorize it with some woven wool throws and pillows - a little Native American suits my taste right now.

To Play Croquet

So I think I'm into croquet.

I have to play it a few more times, to really make the claim, but we did this past weekend and it was a blast!

I've been studying my backyard to see if I can host tournaments at home.  Our yard may be too small, but I definitely want to invest a set and maybe a personalized mallet?  Yes, definitely.

Eventually, I'll have to invest in my croquet uniform. It's a must for every serious athlete.  I'm told I get very "into" the game - I get low to the turf, swing liberally with either my left or right (depending on the angle) and I'm more into getting through the wickets than I am hitting players off course (I'm sure there will be times).  Point is, my outfit will have to move with me and help me look "serious" - competition is a mind game after all and intimidation works.

Some starting thoughts.
Shades for maximum visibility in the late afternoon (Madewell)

A classic pullover to transition into Fall.  (Sonya Rykiel Intarsia Raccoon Sweater)

Pants, no skirts - to keep it classy and an ankle length is key. (J.Crew jacquard capris )

Maybe not sneakers.  Something a bit more refined - like a lace up oxford. (Marni - Metallic Brogues)

And of course, a cocktail to refresh and sustain throughout the game.
Something a littler herbacious, made with Lillet - perhaps the Lillet Sin?

Currently On My Mind

Lots and lots of work on my mind, and then it happens: I'm on a plane, I feel inspired to write in my journal of non-work related things.  A rare occasion these days, but I'm going with it. A few items of note that have surfaced to my attention:

1. A-hem.  It's almost boot and tights season again! Sharpening my Ticonderoga no.2 pencils too. I need these (from Madewell) in my life.

2. How I'd love to steal a moment, every day, for tea and this cake (beautiful photo by Jonathan Lovekin/recipe on Bon Appetit).

3. My new favorite beauty device - the dry skin brush (I learned about it HERE).  Try it, it really is life-changing.

4. Still obsessed with bread and cheese.  Though I feel like I'm always going for the same type of cheese (the kind with a rind, that's gooey on the inside.  I think I should broaden my horizons and learn more with an artisanal cheese class at this place I just discovered near LA: The Institute of Domestic Technology.

5. This little pre-fab house designed by Rocio Romero.  Would go great in my backyard.  No, really.

6. Now that True Blood season and The Newsroom are over (sigh), I may just watch something else - this documentary about a secretive moped gang in Denver may fit the bill.
